Earlier this month, Rick shared a few thoughts about the industry and the main conclusion we should draw (in my opinion at least) is this: growth, just like everything else in this world, doesn’t last for ever. We as domainers are fortunate or even downright spoiled because even if making money in this industry isn’t easy, it’s far easier than in other fields (as mentioned a few days ago).
In the article I’ve linked to, I’ve mentioned some of the industries I’ve been involved in so far.
I’d like to add to that and say that there is a common denominator: the more time passes, the harder it becomes to make money.
In the hosting industry. In the development business. In the book publishing space and so on… including of course the domaining industry 
Think of any industry as a fruit tree.
Initially, there’s lots of low hanging fruit to choose from. You just reach for it, grab the piece you’ve chosen and enjoy!
As time passes however, more and more pieces of low hanging fruit disappear because people before you took them. As of a certain point, you’ll no longer be able to just reach for one and take it because there won’t be any left. You’ll have to grab a chair to be able to reach the “next best thing” in terms of low hanging fruit. But that stage too shall pass. You’ll then need a ladder and so on. It just keeps getting harder.
Am I saying this to discourage you?
Of course not.
There are pros associated with the passing of time as well. You have more information sources than before, it’s easier to learn the ropes, etc.
But you do have to understand that the more time passes, the harder you will have to fight (especially as a newcomer!) for a piece of the action.
That’s just the way it is.
The domain industry (just like all of the others) is maturing. That’s the word you need to remember, maturing. Some people find the idea that the “Wild West” days of domaining will eventually be behind us comforting. Less uncertainties, less confusion. And they’re right.
Others however are worried that there will also be less opportunities. They’re equally correct.
At the end of the day, there’s nothing we can do to stop the process of maturing, all we can do is adapt.
That would be my conclusion for today.
Spend less time+energy worrying about things you cannot control and more time+energy preparing, becoming more adaptable and so on: good luck!
