Jay Daley Selected As First Permanent IETF Executive Director

Jay Daley has joined the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as their first permanent Executive Director, the organisation announced Thursday.

In an announcement on the IETF blog, Jason Livingood, IETF Administration Board Chair, writes “Jay brings a broad range of skills and experience to the IETF Executive Director role, including executive, financial, administrative, legal, and technical leadership. He recently served as interim President and CEO of the Public Interest Registry (PIR) and continues to serve on their board. Before that he was CEO of NZRS, the domain name registry for New Zealand’s .nz ccTLD, and led technology at Nominet UK, the official registry for .UK domain names. He has also served on a variety of other advisory committees and advisory boards.”

The IETF describes itself as “a large open international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers concerned with the evolution of the Internet architecture and the smooth operation of the Internet.”

Daley will be based in New Zealand where he currently lives.
While the selection process was underway Portia Wenze-Danley served as interim
IETF Executive Director. The selection process commenced in May 2019 and as of
July there were 134 highly qualified applicants.

“On behalf of the IETF LLC Board, I also extend our thanks
and appreciation to Portia Wenze-Danley for her service as interim IETF
Executive Director. Portia has provided a great bridge from the IETF
Administrative Oversight Committee (IAOC) organizational model to the IETF LLC
structure, keeping the organisation functioning well administratively through a
great deal of change and uncertainty. Portia will continue until the end of
this calendar year in order to provide a smooth transition to Jay, so please do
take the opportunity to thank her in person at IETF 106 next month.”

“The new IETF Executive Director joins us at a crucial time
with a number of key contracts out for tender (RFPs), so Jay will start work on
those right away, while also contributing to the ongoing bootstrapping of the
LLC through the development of internal policies and processes, development of
a long-term fundraising and sponsorship strategy, long-term organizational
strategy for the LLC and ED role, and much more.”
